Art therapy for individuals with specific learning difficulties is essentially the same as ‘regular’ art therapy, with the difference that there is emphasis on school coursework.

Children and adults with specific learning difficulties often have to grapple with complex feelings about their studies. These may be feelings connected with being unable to understand the subject matter, of not being able to keep up with the peer group, or of being “different”. All these can make learning more difficult than it really is. Furthermore, the individual’s self-esteem may suffer as a result of his or her specific learning difficulties.

In art therapy, the client’s creative expression is accepted exactly as it is. There are no mistakes. In that way, self-confidence is built through creative expression and in relationship with the art therapist, who is both understanding and encouraging.

Art therapy for individuals with learning difficulties focuses on working with feelings that affect learning and general well-being. In addition to following accepted art therapy theories, it also makes use of so-called educational therapy.

Individuals with learning difficulties are often better able to work from a standpoint of visual thinking as opposed to verbal expression. In that way, art therapy can greatly benefit those with learning difficulties.

Comments by the mother of an 11 year old boy:

“My son is dyslexic and has been involved art therapy with Unnur for a while. He is very happy with their work, and when she showed him how he could use art and English together, he was all smiles when the session ended”.
